What Is Thermal Throttling and How to Stop It

Thermal throttling is when a CPU or GPU deliberately slows itself down because it has become too hot. It is a built-in safety feature, not a fault – the chip trades speed for lower temperature to avoid damaging itself. You usually notice it as sudden stutter or dropping frame rates after a few minutes under load. Here is why it happens and, more importantly, how to stop it.

Every modern processor has a temperature limit, typically around 95–100°C. Reach it and the chip automatically reduces its clock speed to cool down. It is the digital equivalent of easing off the accelerator before the engine overheats.

Why throttling happens

It comes down to one thing: heat building up faster than the cooler can carry it away. The usual culprits are a dust-clogged cooler, dried-out thermal paste, poor case airflow, a hot room, or simply a cooler that is too small for the chip. When the processor can no longer keep itself below its limit, slowing down is its only defence.

How to tell if your PC is throttling

Watch clock speed and temperature together using a monitoring tool. If the temperature hits the limit at the exact moment the clock speed drops, that is throttling in action. The symptom you actually feel is a game running smoothly for a few minutes, then stuttering or losing frame rate once everything heats up.

How to stop thermal throttling

  • Clear dust from the cooler, fans, and filters
  • Reapply fresh thermal paste – see how often to replace thermal paste
  • Improve case airflow with a sensible fan layout
  • Set a more aggressive fan curve so cooling ramps up sooner
  • Undervolt the chip to cut heat with little or no performance loss
  • Upgrade to a stronger cooler if the current one is undersized
