The iQOO 16 launches in China today, September 29, 2026, at 7 PM local time (4:30 PM IST, 11:00 UTC), and iQOO says sales start right after the event. The confirmed headline features are the world’s first 2K 165Hz phone display, built with Samsung Display, Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, iQOO’s own Q4 gaming chip, and a 50MP main camera with a large 1/1.3-inch sensor.

I have been following the iQOO teasers on Weibo for two weeks now, and this is one of those rare phones where the company has told us almost everything before the show. The only big missing piece is the price, which iQOO has kept locked until tonight. Below is everything iQOO has officially confirmed, what the leaks say, and whether I think it is worth waiting for.

iQOO 16 launch date, time and where to buy

iQOO confirmed the date on September 15 with official posters. The event runs at 7 PM China time on September 29. iQOO has said the phone goes on sale immediately after the launch, so there is no long pre-order wait in China. Expect it on iQOO’s own store, vivo’s online store, JD.com, Tmall and the usual Chinese retailers.

It is not a solo show, either. iQOO is launching the iQOO Pad Ultra gaming tablet on the same stage, plus a new iQOO gaming headset. An India launch has not been announced yet, although iQOO usually brings its numbered flagships to India a few weeks or months after China.

The display is the real story

Honestly, most flagship launches this year have been about batteries and cameras. iQOO decided to go after the screen. It says the iQOO 16 is the first phone ever to pair 2K resolution with a 165Hz refresh rate. Until now you usually had to pick one: sharp 2K panels topped out at 120Hz or 144Hz, and 165Hz gaming screens were stuck at 1.5K.

The panel is co-developed with Samsung Display and uses Samsung’s newest M16 light-emitting material plus what iQOO calls LEAD 2.0 technology, which removes the traditional polarizer layer. Dropping the polarizer lets more light out, and iQOO claims the approach cuts power use by around 30 percent compared with a regular panel at the same settings. That matters, because a 2K 165Hz screen could otherwise eat a battery for lunch.

For gamers there is up to 500Hz multi-touch sampling, anti-glare tuning for games, DC dimming and PWM dimming up to 3,300Hz, which should be easier on the eyes for people sensitive to flicker. The screen measures 6.85 inches.

Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 plus Q4

iQOO’s Weibo teasers confirm the phone is among the first batch to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, the top chip in the new dual-tier lineup Qualcomm showed off at its Snapdragon Summit 2026 last week. It is built on a 2nm process. iQOO pairs it with its own Q4 gaming chip, a helper processor that handles frame interpolation and upscaling so the main chip does not have to work as hard. iQOO is also promising full-scene ray tracing in supported games, upgraded vibration motors and louder speakers.

In plain terms: this is a phone built for people who play Honor of Kings, Genshin Impact or PUBG for hours and want high frame rates without the phone turning into a hand warmer.

Cameras and design

iQOO has confirmed a 50MP main sensor with a large 1/1.3-inch size, which is a step up from what iQOO typically puts on its standard (non-Pro) models. Leaks say it sits next to a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP periscope telephoto, making it a triple-50MP setup.

The design follows a theme iQOO calls “Tomorrow’s Porthole.” The three rear lenses sit inside a square, mechanical-looking island inspired by a spacecraft window. The official Chasing Light version has a laser holographic back that shifts between red and blue as you tilt it. Legend is a lighter, cleaner finish, and Racing Track is a matte dark grey.

Battery and charging (leaked)

iQOO has not officially confirmed the battery yet, but several reports say it is somewhere between 8,400mAh and 8,500mAh. Charging reports vary between 100W and 120W wired, with 50W wireless. Treat these numbers as likely but not final until the event tonight. If the big battery is true, it would be one of the largest cells ever in a non-rugged flagship.

iQOO 16 expected price

iQOO has not revealed pricing, and it even ran a “guess the price” teaser. For context, last year’s iQOO 15 started around CNY 4,199 in China. With memory prices up sharply across the industry this year, and a brand-new 2nm chip inside, I would be surprised if the iQOO 16 comes in cheaper. My guess is a starting price close to or a little above last year’s, with the 16GB+1TB model going much higher. I will update this post once the official prices are out.

Should you wait for it?

If you live in China and want a gaming-first flagship, this looks like one of the strongest options of the year on paper. In India, iQOO has built a loyal following with value phones like the iQOO Z11, and its flagships usually undercut Samsung and OnePlus by a healthy margin. If that pattern holds, the iQOO 16 could be a serious performance-per-rupee pick when it lands.

My only hesitation is the software. OriginOS is polished, but it still ships with more pre-installed apps than I would like. That is a small complaint next to a screen and chip combo like this one. You can see the full teaser rundown on Beebom.
